This position is responsible for managing the accounting functions of the Canadian organization. In this critical role, the associate will be responsible for driving the compliance and statutory reporting requirements of the Canadian organization. Key points of contact include the head of the Canadian Finance department and the U.S. Corporate Finance department in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. Working as an effective and contributing member of the Canadian Finance team will be paramount for success in this challenging role.
RESPONSIBILITIES/KEY COMPETENCIES:
· Lead member of the Sarbanes-Oxley project representing the Canadian organization and responsible for driving the results of the project in the local organization.
· Leads the completion of the annual corporate tax return for BD Canada working with BD’s external auditors and Corporate headquarter Tax department.
· Manages, maintains and reconciles inter-company account balances with other BD entities and works to improve inter-company processes to reduce reporting exposure.
· Directs the inter-company payables process and cash management function
· Prepares quarterly and annual balance sheet forecasts in addition to other management reporting.
· Key contact with corporate headquarters in reporting Balance Sheet variances on quarterly & annual basis.
· Interprets Corporate Finance policies & guidelines and ensures local knowledge and compliance. Works to close gaps where appropriate in these areas.
· Researches divergence between Canadian GAAP and Corporate finance policies/guidelines and recommends appropriate course of action when required.
· Audits account balances and/or calculation of reserve balances to ensure compliance with internal and external guidelines.
· Recommends changes to existing financial controls or guidelines as required.
· Manages and develops two Accounting associates.
· Other project work as assigned by the Director-Finance.
EDUCATIONAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
· A university degree in business/commerce/economics or MBA.
· A CA/CGA designation preferable with +4 years post designation experience.
· Experience in a corporate accounting function with some responsibility for completing tax returns.
· Knowledgeable of Canadian and U.S. GAAP accounting principles and guidelines.
· Ability to assess procedural, reporting or compliance gaps and develop and implement solutions.
· Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop key contacts quickly.
