RESPONSIBILITIES
Working as part of the Research and Production team within the Economics
Department, this position requires a high degree of proficiency in computer
applications such as Excel and PowerPoint and a good working knowledge of
economic and financial markets.
Major responsibility will be preparation and updating of PowerPoint
presentations for Economics Department Senior Management, through
consultation and coordination with members of the department. The Research
and Production Team is also responsible for:
1. Database Administration:
Update daily indicator packages on a timely basis by downloading data from
various vendors
Maintain a database of economic indicators, occasionally modifying the database
to comply with user requests
Manage and update centralized Excel files and databases referenced by all Groups
within Scotia Economics
Provide quality checks on Excel spreadsheets
2. Research Support:
Support the Scotia Economics team by providing data to respond to requests from
the Chief Economist and members of the Management team
Handle and prioritize multiple requests and projects
3. PowerPoint Chart Library:
Update data in charts as new data are released
Add new charts to the Library as they are created and update the
Table of Contents/Index
Maintain a consistent "look" and format for all Economics
presentations
4. Calendars of Economic Release Dates:
Update and coordinate publication of economic release and event calendars,
distributed to internal and external clients
Maintain database of economic release dates, consensus numbers (from Bloomberg)
and estimates. This ongoing database is the source from which calendars in all
Economics reports are derived
5. Coordination of Information Technology:
Coordinate data supply and liaise with data vendors
Organize department network structure
Oversee computer support, liaising with ScotiaCapital technicians and providing
basic front-line tech support (e.g., printer problems)
SKILLS and TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
High level of proficiency in math and computer applications:
Excel
PowerPoint and graphics experience
Word (including templates)
Experience with Visual BASIC for Excel, or some other programming environment
* Ability to handle and prioritize multiple requests and projects
* Good working knowledge of economic and financial markets
* Strict attention to detail is key
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
B.A. (major or minor in Economics and/or Commerce) OR Business-related
diploma (including economics courses)
