Reports to Director, Information Technology
Job Purpose
This position is responsible for monitoring of and administering to the operational stability of the enterprise infrastructure Servers and network. This includes the configuration, maintenance, and availability of the server infrastructure used by Bulk Barn; administration of the enterprise infrastructure monitoring application; proactive review of operational and network logs to identify service issues; developing server systems and security architectures anticipating emerging functional requirements for new and existing facilities, services, and applications; reviewing and revising server and network systems implementations plans to ensure that the long-term server systems and security architecture goals are realized; providing expert consultation in comprehensive server systems and security design discussions with Management and the Systems team. This position will specialize in one or more critical services; virtualization, domain architecture/group policies, storage/replication/data recovery, windows/open systems, unified communications, network administration.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Configuration management and change control of servers.
• Ensure availability of web, database, and application servers.
• Perform backups and ensure recoverability of servers.
• Providing expert server systems consultation services to non-systems administrators through actively participating in problem solving and internal project meetings.
• Assist development teams, COTS team and Infrastructure teams with the support of servers hosting client and internal applications.
• Communicate system trends, issues and outages to management and peers through evaluating, implementing, maintaining and improving server systems management tools:
o Systems configuration, documentation, and reporting
Create build specification based on application requirements while maximizing security, reliability and performance
Creating/updating documentation of build, backup and recovery procedures
o Systems monitoring and alerting
o Systems performance monitoring
• Analyzing, designing, and implementing server systems upgrades and expansions accurately without adversely affecting systems availability.
• Provide 1st/2nd/3rd level server systems support by addressing issues, questions and problems.
• Responsibility for server systems security and support to peers with security issues:
o Implementing, maintaining, and improving server system security
o Identifying and responding to security vulnerabilities, attacks and events
Logging breaches or recognized attempted breaches
o Finding, testing, and implementing ways to harden systems against possible threats
o Supporting vulnerability scanning
o Centralized patch deployment systems
o Developing, reviewing and communicating accepted practices related to server systems security
o Escalating security incidents to Management
• Mentoring Server Systems Administrators.
• Ability to participate in a rotational on-call schedule.
• Optimize client and internal satisfaction through teamwork and a strong commitment to customer service by:
o Fostering an atmosphere of collaborative problem-solving to ensure the networks and systems needs of the enterprise strategic plans are met
o Displaying a strong commitment to customer service
o Helping wherever possible to facilitate operational improvement
o Taking timely and decisive action when necessary to ensure that critical activities are accomplished promptly and successfully
o Monitoring client satisfaction
o Maintaining responsiveness
o Sharing knowledge with peers
• Performs and assumes other duties and responsibilities as may be required at the direction of the Director Information Technology
Qualifications
• Advanced working knowledge and advanced to expert skill levels with Windows servers; 2003, 2008, 2008R2.
• Advanced working knowledge and advanced to expert working experience with IIS web servers
• Advanced working knowledge and advanced to expert skill levels in server virtualization VMware
• Advanced working knowledge and advanced to expert skill levels in NAS and SAN technology.
• Advanced working knowledge and advanced to expert skill levels in unified communications including email architecture and operations.
• Advanced working knowledge and advanced to expert skill levels in domain management structure, network architecture, and network administration.
• Designing, testing and documenting the use of new features and procedures to improve server systems and security operations.
• Researching and developing systems and security specifications for the next generation of hardware/software platforms.
• Innovating and experimenting with new techniques of server systems and security administration.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a time-critical production environment.
• Ability to evaluate system architecture and design.
• Ability to gather, interpret, document, and evaluate server requirements.
• Must be available for 7x24 support in the event of scheduled and unscheduled downtime.
• Ability and initiative to learn about new technologies, hardware and software products and relate to how the new services would benefit the enterprise.
• Must be able to adapt to a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment with numerous interruptions
• Ability to lift devices weighing up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
• Office environment
• Conditions may include long periods of sitting, using a keyboard or mouse, and reading a PC monitor
• On call weekly rotation for 7x24 support in the event of scheduled and unscheduled downtime
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to lift Computer equipment and boxes of approximately 50 pounds
Concentration/Sensory Requirements
• Must have excellent concentration skills to resolve complex problems
• Must have attention to detail
